Went down to meeting room a little early - after a little brekkie snack in the room. Am juicing you know. Did that with a little raisin bread bought at the Farmer's Market the day before.
Anyway, went a little early since I was working in the book trade. Registered early and got to work right away organizing the the receiving line from the attendees. That was VERY well done of Carol, to have everything organized by color code and numbers already assembled. Very well done and easily carried through. NATURALLY being a mother's little helper let the workers pick out 5 book trade books first. (Yeah, Yeah, but I got some really good stuff!)
After the masses were let in the conference room, it was more get to know you time and a buffet brunch. It was very good and the lines moved well, I assume they did since no food fights broke out! (This is an insight gained later after I saw the trading 'techniques' these 'ladies' displayed at the trading tables!)

Falcon did a very good job as MC.
Kept things well on schedule and
made everyone aware of the time for their presentations. Jo Beverley was the keynote speaker and she was terrific. Loved to hear the English accent. AND its very true what QM says about authors!!! They are just readers who have written their own idea of a story! Jo is a great reader and listener and her presentation great. |
Miranda Jarrett was next - the lady of the sway away hair. Don't see how she keeps it from getting away from her. Long, blonde and very electric! She was really nice though and also had a interesting talk on how she got started writing her own stories. Stephanie Mittman was so funny. Her favorite phrase was "I never signed so many autographs before that haven't been on checks" She was so excited about being at CR that she was more fan than celeb writer!

Our own Linda Hurst and Sara Reyes (PM
herself) gave a little talk on the right way to go about hunting for your
TBR shelves.
Very dry, witty presentation.
Linda presented her stool - perfect for sitting,
Sara had everyone green with envy about her palm pilot! No leaves in sight, sigh - you know how backward I am. Still can't get over how I thought she was talking about a tree at first. I confess, I am not computer illiterate - just computer dumb!! |
We adjourned to different presentations by the authors. Some on writing, research, reader input for stories, etc. Sorry, I had been to so many writer things on the fringes of my library stuff that I wasn't really interested and went upstairs to put my feet up for awhile- turned out NEEDED IT.
Ok. panels over and time for the book trade.
That was very well handled, too. Everyone already had their tickets
from the advance trade and from their traders handed in that morning.
So we had separated the books according to the three different sections.
regency, single title and category. Everyone could select 5 books
at a time so everyone could have a good chance at the books. Some
just picked up their advanced trade and some were there to the bitter end
and trading tickets to get what they wanted. Some were very creative.
UBS traders were in there elbows pumping! - but they could only get 5 books
at a time and had to wait. Was super, well done! During this
and after there were soft drinks and some more of Karen's cookies, some
pretzels and other stuff
for snacks.
We had a hour till groups went off in different directions for supper. One group to Moselulu (a ship), one group to City Tavern and the group I was in went to Bookbinders.
Very scenic, original building - NOT HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE!! I went anyway of course. Nothing like telling me I couldn't do something! First of all the trip downtown. What a blast!! Went with Stephanie Mittman and her husband and Nancy Miller. FUN ride. We had directions (kinda, sorta original interpretation kind of thing) Told you what street to turn on - BUT not which way to turn! Did a scenic tour though the same part of downtown about 4 times, but we made it there before any of the other cars did!! This place is not known for its speedy service evidently. Our table reservation was for CX so many and we were missing 2 so they had to reset the table and would call us when it was ready. Ok, 20 min later we were called for the table! Now it was about 8:00. Everyone ordered, got served - food was delish!! VERY very good stuff.
Then brought out the dessert tray. GROAN!! was very good. sat there and didn't raise my hand or drool or order. Frankly, i was so full I couldn't have eaten anything. Seemed like we had eaten every couple of hours ever since we got there. Ok, Ok, I hit the cookies pretty hard after the trading. you should have seen them kids - it was great.
Anyway, back to the Bookbinders supper table - The Bill came - one check. Someone had a calculator and passed it around with the bill. THEY HAVE TAX there. Couldn't believe it. We had to add in tax and tip, etc. Came around and we were only a dollar off. Only reason I mention this little do it because we had two fellows. Stephanie Mittman's husband and Maudeen's husband. I was sitting by Maudeen's husband and the other guy was on the other side. You should have heard the discussion that went on about the bill while everyone was tallying their own stuff. It was hilarious! Talk about a guy thing!!
Our little meal was over about 10:00. Good time had by all though. Still hyped by the time we got back so dropped by QM's room for a little chat before going to bed. That's one terrific lady, guys. She wasn't feeling well the whole time and she just kept going - just like the battery bunny!
Went back to my room to play with my new books before going to bed and packed.
Bored yet? Sorry they are so long. but we had long days and we did a lot!
